Teaching on the doctoral programme is face-to-face and attendance at classes is compulsory. Attendance may be monitored, without prejudice to the situations provided for by law for the purposes of justifying absence.

Assessment in the curricular units of the doctoral programme is theoretical and practical in nature, including both oral and written elements, at the discretion of the lecturer.

The written elements necessarily include the preparation of a report which, in accordance with article 70(3) of the Master’s and Doctoral Regulations, must be submitted by 31 July.

The doctoral programme is approved when the student passes all the subjects that make up the course.

2nd Phase – Preparation and Defence of the Thesis

Access to the thesis stage presupposes completion of the doctoral programme with a final grade of at least 16 points, corresponding to the average of all course subjects.

Holders of a master’s degree with a mark equal to or higher than 17 are exempt from taking the doctoral course and may apply to the Faculty’s Scientific Council to proceed directly to the 2nd stage of thesis preparation.

The final classification of the cycle of studies leading to the doctoral degree is awarded by the Jury appointed to assess and discuss the thesis, with the final result being expressed as Refused or Approved.

For the academic degree of doctor, the Jury may award a final qualification, expressed as: Approved or Approved with Distinction and when, in accordance with the criteria defined by the Scientific Council and the Approved with Distinction qualification has been awarded unanimously, the Jury may also award the Approved with Distinction and Praise qualification.
